Reflexology

What Is Reflexology?

Reflexology is the application of pressure to certain points in the feet, hands or ears, which
correspond with the body’s organs, tissues and muscles. Helping not only to improve the
circulation of blood, oxygen and ‘qi’ (vital energy) around the body, reflexology also aids in the
relief of stress and can alleviate pain in a variety of cases, too.

You should always let your reflexologist know:

  • if you are, or think you might be, pregnant

  • if you have recently had an operation or surgery

  • if you have had any injuries that might affect your treatment e.g. a recently healed broken ankle

  • if you have circulation problems in the feet

  • if you have blood clots or inflammation of your leg veins

What are the health benefits?

Reflexology is deemed as a complementary therapy and should not be used as an alternative for visiting a healthcare practitioner.

Many people visit a reflexologist for their general wellbeing, helping to make them feel relaxed and calm. However, some people will visit to help ease symptoms from a variety of conditions, including:

  • poor circulation

  • sleep and eating disorders

  • anxiety and depression

  • stress

  • migraine

  • sinus problems

  • breathing difficulties i.e. asthma

  • symptoms of menopause

  • pre-menstrual tension

  • sports injuries

  • back pain and muscle tension

Precautions

What to Expect from Reflexology

Although reflexology is not actually a foot massage, the foot and lower leg will receive some massage throughout the treatment. It is mostly about applying pressure to specific points on the foot.

Some people are concerned that they may be ticklish on the foot. However, a firm pressure is used and a ticklish sensation should not be felt.

A session will last about an hour. Some clients will find that their health issues can be eased in one session. However, a number of problems may be caused by lifestyle components that cannot necessarily be changed, and ongoing treatment may then be required.

After treatment

People respond to reflexology in different ways. Some may feel very relaxed after a session, whilst others can feel energized. In a few cases, the wonderful release of built-up tension that the treatment is capable of achieving, can cause people to become emotional or tearful.

So, for your first session, it may be worth taking this into consideration and not having too much planned afterwards.
